Our house has what we New Mexicans call a “nicho,” or a little area recessed into the wall, on one side of the hall leading in from our front door. Since this space is the closest thing we have to a formal entry, I like to use this little spot as a place to showcase seasonal vignettes to greet anyone who happens to stop by for a visit. Today I thought I’d share the display I created for Easter, which (can you believe it?) is now less than a month away!

Growing up, my mom always decorated a tree for Easter with brightly colored eggs hung on a tree branch she had spray painted white. I always loved it, and it’s a tradition I’ve carried on with my own family. My “tree” is actually three floral branches I purchased at half off from Jo-Ann placed in a tall green vase. I absolutely love the texture and color of the flowers on the branches!

This year, I parlayed one of my most recent obsessions into a new decor motif: polka dots! I created all of the polka-dotted plaster eggsyou see here using humble plastic eggs I scored from the Dollar Spot at Target. (Is anyone as enamored of that section as I am?) In addition to the small egg ornaments, I also made two giant eggs for the display using the same basic technique.

In addition to the plaster eggs,I rounded out the display with some floating paper butterflies and aframed dimensional cross and some bright green Easter grass. I prefer to use the shredded paper grass instead of the plastic stuff, since it is more eco-friendly, and it makes for much easier clean-up later on!

Wanting to create a seasonal vignette of your own? Here are a few tips to help you along the way!

  • Dimension is key in creating attractive vignettes, and nothing adds more dimension than displaying items at varying heights.I used crystal candlesticks and a cake plate to prop up the various elements in my vignette, but you can also use things like crates, books or really anything under the sun to elevate your objects.
  • When decorating small spaces, consider adding a mirror as a backdrop. The reflection of light does wonders to make a tight area feel larger! My Easter “tree” looks doubly full thanks to the reflection of light off the mirror hung at the back of the niche creating an optical illusion that it is twice as big as it actually is.
  • Wondering how to keep floral stems from leaning to one side when placed in a vase as I did with my Easter tree here? Place a little square of floral foam inside the top lip of the vase and push your stems down through it.Nice and secure, and no leaning whatsoever!

  • Don’t let your creativity be stifled by what seasonal displays “ought to” look like. Traditional color schemes (i.e., red and green at Christmas or pastel hues at Easter) are nothing but a suggestion. If you’d rather take a different direction with your decor, go for it! Although I opted for the traditional pinks, greens and blues of the season, I punched them up a bit in typical Amy fashion and used the most vibrant versions of them I could find.

Are you from NM? I was born in Albuquerque. I only lived there for a year before we moved to VA, but my parents lived there for awhile after my dad got out of the Air Force. 🙂
